WHAT IS FOSTERING?
Fostering for Toni’s Kitty Rescue means taking care of underage kittens in your home until they are adopted. This of course means feeding, cleaning, keeping them warm and safe. It also includes socializing them, getting them used to the sights and sounds of a household, getting used to being handled, having nails trimmed, etc. It may also include medicating and taking them to the vet. You will be responsible for ensuring the kittens are vaccinated, dewormed, neutered and receive medical care as needed. All of this requires a considerable time commitment and dedication.
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE BECOMING A FOSTER?
Potential fosters must have:
• experience with cats and/or kittens
• a flexible schedule to accommodate emergencies and meetings with adopters
• easy access to transportation
• and must be available for at least a two-month period during the season. (We will accommodate emergencies, but if you travel a lot during the summer, fostering is not right for you.)
We would like a commitment of a minimum of one full season and new fosters are not allowed to adopt kittens. Everyone in the household must agree to fostering and be aware that kittens will be stinky at times. Diarrhea in kittens is very common and everyone needs to be prepared to deal with the mess and the smell.
TKR provides to foster homes:
• all food for your fosters
• any medications prescribed for your fosters
• other necessary supplies
TKR does NOT supply cat litter.
Fosters must be in communication with TKR administrative staff. We are here to help and assure you are set up for success, as well as the success of your foster kittens.
HOW TO BECOME A TKR FOSTER
Please complete the TKR Foster Application in its entirety. You may not leave any of the fields or questions unanswered.
After you submit your completed application, you will be contacted by a TKR representative. If you seem to be a good fit, you will be invited to a Foster Orientation. After the Orientation, if you and TKR feel fostering is right for you, you will be invited to Foster Training. We will then sign you up as a foster. When you receive your first set of foster kittens, TKR will also give you supplies as needed.
Please note: TKR receives bottle-feeding kittens starting in March and April. If you do not wish to foster bottle feeders (we always give first time fosters weaned kittens), you may have to wait until May or June to receive your foster kittens.
